Survey Results Are Here!

Over a 2-week period we received 6,446 respondents to our home-page survey.  Thanks to everyone who participated!  Not only are your responses extremely helpful for us to create the most effective product, there was some enlightening information on the lengths we will all go to in the hopes of stopping our muscle cramps.

Our results aligned with general beliefs about muscle cramps: they tend to get more prevalent as you age.  I know that’s certainly been the case in my personal experience as well.  More than 56% of the almost 6,500 respondents who experienced cramps were over the age of 35.  The youngest group, age 18-25 was just 14% of the total.

In regard to when we experience muscle cramps, the overwhelming majority (4,577) said “in bed at night.”  Only 11% of respondents cramped during exercise, with the remaining 18% cramping after their workouts.  Unfortunately, it’s unclear as to whether some of those “in bed at night” cramps are also due to physical activity from earlier in the day.  I know there have been days when horrific cramps will strike me 4-5 hours after a tough workout, as I’m drifting off to sleep.

I think the last question is the most eye-opening: How Do You Stop Muscle Cramps?  The variety of answers, and lack of consensus in any one category, illustrates how little is actually known about muscle cramping and cures.  Even after answers were grouped together into their closest categories, we had well over 20 different treatment methods.  These ranged from opposites ideas, such as “heat” and “ice”, to more traditional methods like “bananas”, “hydrating”, and “electrolytes”.  Other answers included standing/lying on a cold floor, drinking club soda, taking epsom salts, and using foam rollers, with special shoutouts to “Cry”, “Scream”, and “Suffer.”  I think we’ve all been there.

The most common answers are below.  In the next blog we will discuss some of these remedies and whether, according to science, they may or may not work (although logic suggests that if you’re visiting our site, they’re probably not working).
